Usually, hiring a plumber needs to be a quick decision for most homeowners, a time where the local directory is quickly grabbed to find the number of the most local plumber. Sometimes the decision is a good one, sometimes not, as there are unfortunately plumbers out there who do rip people off, giving the good ones a bad name. Unfortunately, you don’t usually find out until the point that you have been let down, but try not to worry, this does happen to most people at one stage in their life when they need a plumber, so we have put some steps together here to try and help you look out for the right things in a plumber.
Does the plumber seem helpful? Is he upfront about his costs when asked? Does he ask more questions about your problem? If you answered yes to these, then you could have found yourself a good plumber. If not – keep looking.
Does the plumber turn up on time? Does he have a good excuse if he does? Did he call to let you know he was going to be late? Don’t fret if a plumber is 10 minutes behind schedule – none of us can help traffic, but if this goes over half an hour without a call, we would suggest that you continue looking for another plumber. Any good plumber running a credible business would do anything not to let his customers down – bear this in mind.
Is the plumber in a uniform? Does he show you an ID card or qualification cards up front? Always make sure you ask, to understand who you are letting in to your home on that day, around your loved ones. Most large companies however, do this for you by fully vetting all of their plumbers, but if this is a one man band, make sure you do your checks.
How does the plumber react when you ask him any questions? Does he seem comfortable in answering them? Is he asking you any questions about any action you have taken personally thus far? What is his answer when you ask him what his hourly rate is? If he quotes a fixed price, does this include all parts and VAT if applicable? What if he runs in to issues whilst on the job, does the price increase? All questions you need to ask the plumber so not to be hit with any hidden charges.
Finally, does the plumber give you any helpful advice on any other possible issues? When he has completed the job, does he give you a telephone number you can reach him on directly and personally if you couldn’t before? Having the number of the plumber can prove to be very handy and provide peace of mind knowing that if something goes wrong again – that you have his personal contact number.
If you follow these guidelines, we are sure that you will find the right plumber for you. Don’t feel scared to ask these questions – remember – YOU are the customer!
